COM 471: Persuasion
COM 471 teaches the analysis of the ways in which beliefs, values, attitudes, and behavior are deliberately influenced through communication. In particular, students learn various theoretical frameworks to employ in order to identify effective channels and mechanisms for persuasion on media platforms, campaigns, speech, and rhetorical communication. This class is designed for college juniors and seniors, with an emphasis on a social scientific approach to persuasion research. COM 3700: Health Communication COM 3700 investigates the manner in which individuals, campaigns, and healthcare providers deliver and receive messages regarding health related phenomena within a variety of contexts. These contexts can be included but are not limited to: the family, healthcare settings, media, and the self. The course provides an overview of current scholarship focused on health communication with the goal of developing students' understanding of theories, issues, and methodologies that cover the field. The course also explores and examines the sociohistorical, interpersonal and translational aspects of health in order for students to become more mindful, education, and effective health communicators. COM 220: Introduction to Public Speaking COM 220 is designed to increase competence in public speaking and the critique of public speaking. Students learn this through emphasizing choice and organization of material, sound reasoning, audience analysis, and delivery. This course is designed for all levels of public speaking and is suited for any year in college. |
COM 383: Qualitative Research Methods
COM 383 introduces students to a wide variety of qualitative research methods for analyzing data in the field of social science. This course is designed for college juniors and seniors, where students learn multiple qualitative methods, how to employ them, and how to analyze their data to interpret significant findings. Students conduct their own research project from start to finish, producing a final manuscript relating to their research topic. COM 210: Introduction to Communication Studies COM 210 introduces students to the core principles that undergird the study and practice of communication - communication literacy, research inquiry, theories and concepts, and community engagement. Principles are discussed and developed in the context of social interaction, rhetoric and critical studies, and communication and culture. This course is designed to be an introduction to communication, suited for all ages in college. |
